The Beau Soleil Podcast – Episode 2: Kilimanjaro and Lessons from the Mountain

Following the launch of The Beau Soleil Podcast, our student-led series continues with a second episode exploring one of the most powerful learning experiences available to Beau Soleil students: expedition.

Produced by members of our Podcast & Newspaper Club, the podcast gives students a platform to reflect on the experiences, challenges and ideas that shape life at Beau Soleil while developing their communication, curiosity and critical thinking skills.

Episode 2: Kilimanjaro – Lessons from a Summit That Never Happened

What happens when a group of students attempt to climb Africa’s highest mountain — and don’t reach the summit?

In this episode, students Bella and Momo join our Head of PE and Sport Science, Ms King, to reflect on their recent Mount Kilimanjaro expedition and the difficult decision to turn back when weather conditions made it unsafe to continue.

Rather than focusing solely on the goal of reaching the summit, the conversation explores what the experience revealed about:

  • Resilience in the face of setbacks

  • The importance of teamwork and mutual support

  • Preparation and physical endurance

  • The judgement required to make responsible decisions in challenging environments

In many ways, expeditions like this challenge the traditional ways success is measured in education. On a mountain there are no grades, mark schemes or predicted outcomes — only real decisions, physical limits and the need to work together.

The discussion raises an important question: if experiences like this cannot be graded or easily measured, how do we recognise their value?

At Beau Soleil, our extensive Trips Programme is designed to push students beyond the classroom, encouraging them to develop resilience, humility and confidence through real-world challenges.

Sometimes the most important lessons are not the ones that end at the summit.
